I have travelled and do travel quite extensively, normally booking most things in advance, and through the internet.
I know however that there are also special prices and offers for last minute "takers" for the night...
meaning that a room that is left unsold for the night might be offered at a cheaper rate, just to fill it. this has happened to me before, but of course it means that you must take the risk of walking into fully booked hotels...and search a bit untill you find one with an available room.
my question is...is this generally true in ireland? (belfast specifically)..and would it be cheaper than booking through internet?

I'm there for a weekend and am not sure I'll need the hotel at all..which us why I'm not convinced I should book online...but I will, if the above should not be true..

I hope all of the above makes sense to someone with a clever answer ready icon razz what is cheaper, booking a hotel through internet at special fares, or walking into one on the night you need?

I have ALWAYS gotten a cheaper rate at a hotel when I walk in about 6PM and am standing there at the reservation desk with money in my hand and ready to rent a room... which if they DON'T rent it... they will lose the money for that day... usually they will give me a BETTER rate than what I have seen when looking for a room in the same hotel, but on the internet.

If they DON'T give me a better rate, then I will just get back in the car and drive down the street to the NEXT MOTEL and the person at the reception desk may even make a suggestion as which motels in town have rooms.

Never worked for me. I’ve always used the internet cheaper rates. When I was in Shanghai I decided to stay an extra night, it cost me more because I didn’t book online.

Probably walking into the hotel on the night that you want the room would be more expensive as they would assume you are desperate and will pay above the normal rate for a room.

The solution could be to book in advance but dont tell your name on arrival till you check how much there ‘chance’ rooms are.
