I am going on vacation in Fort Lauderdale, FL, for a 8 days in about a week. My husband wants to fly out for the weekend, from Chicago, but even though I paid 129 round trip for the flight, he can't find anything less than 350 now! The plan is to wait until the very last minute, and hope for the best! I've been on hotwire, farecast, orbitz, and everything else I've ever heard of, but still no good deals! Does anyone have any secret tips, like waiting until the day before or the day of, calling the airlines, an awesome travel agency, any tips at all?! We are getting desperate!

It would be almost impossible to get a Cheap, last minute flight.
Only pre-planned flights can be cheap.

on Feb 28(the day before the flight) the fare went up to $600 dollars!

also if you buy a ticket at last minute this usually trigger your boarding
pass to coded with the dreaded code of SSSS mean you will
have a more intense visit with the TSA agent which can include
body scanning, the sniffer machine, the agent searching your bags
including your carry-on,frisking and handwanding all because you thought
you could get a lower price ticket at the last minute
(this is what happen to me at SFO I flew from SFO to lax
at the last minute and thats what I had go though
(although the body scanner machine hadn’t been installed
yet but the puffer machine was)

To get the best prices, you should buy your ticket at least 14 days before your departure date. Some airlines have weekend specials where you fly out on a Saturday and return either Monday or Tuesday. Delta has these weekend specials. I would not be surprised if the other airlines do as well. See if Spirit Airlines has anything or Southwest Airlines.

the cheapest flight I could find was on Spirit air leaving April 2 – 6 for 211 including tax. You will also have to pay 15 for checked in baggage. If you are a member of the 9 fare club you will get a little more of a discount but at this time you would have to pay 30/year and only save about 10 dollars on the trip
