My friend and I have spontaneously decided to go on a spur of the moment vacation within the next few weeks. my girlfriend and i had the urge to go on a vacation this weekend. im hoping that because of the current economic situation there are some good deals to be had. ideally it would be something all-inclusive. im just not sure what site to use as i cant seem to do all-inclusive searches on most of the major travel sites.

there are no all inclusives in the US, you have to go to the caribbean. there are some great deals right now, check out sandals in montego bay, jamaica.

My son turns 13 in June. I want to surprise him with a sun hol as we have never been. This would include his two younger brothers...is it worth holding off for last minute deals i.e. packed ready to go and book? any advice appreciated.

With 3 Kids under 13 I wouldn't recommend leaving it to the very last minute. There could be a lot of stress.
There are literally hundreds of web sites with cheap holidays, see the one below as an example.
Alternatively have a look through the holidays on Teletext you can get some bargains there. There's even a holiday chanel on SKY with some great bargains.

Sometimes booking early (at the earliest possible time 300+ days before travel) can be cheap, but in my expereince the rates show no real variance day by day or by time this far out.

If we wait till the last minute you can get good deals, but on the other hand prices often tend to go up.

Is there an optimal time to buy tickets?

Early not always guarantees cheaper. Next year is too far ahead, and sure you can book, but sometimes it is better to monitor the prices for some time. Last minute deals are usually more expensive than those that are offered 3-5 weeks before leaving. Farecast is good website for such information.

I have 5 days off work from Dec 23-27 and I'll be traveling with my gf, we prefer to go somewhere warm and would like to spend around $350 per person. I already checked 'last minute vacation' specials on airlines websites and travelocity, expedia, orbitz, etc.. but didn't see anything good.
Oh and we can travel ANYWHERE in the world, it doesn't matter if it's cold, anywhere besides Central US and New England.

If you've tried the airline sites themselves, try doing a search on Yahoo for them. There are plenty of sites that have these deals going on. Good luck!
