Due to a back up, the current expedited wait at my post office is about ten weeks (although some have been sent back to the post office in only two to three weeks), but I've been told that a special courier service may ship it even faster. Should I take my chances and go through the post office, or is there some recommended online service out there I should use?
Sorry, I forgot to mention that I'm a legal resident of California.

If you are in the US you are correct about it taking 10 weeks. The passport web site indicates that a passport can be received in 2 weeks with an additional charge but it seems to only be for renewals. There are companies that will do it in as little as 24 hours for $300 plus government fees. Here are some web sites.
